How to Demonstrate Effective Leadership Promo

It is my pleasure to share How to Demonstrate Effective Leadership: 24 Real-Life Examples of Grace in Action has been published.

The book shares a Christ-centered approach from real-life examples of how effective leadership skills can be successfully demonstrated in tough situations. It provides:

  • A clear demonstration of how your faith is a competitive advantage.
  • An easy narrative reading versus being another dry, boring, theory-driven book.
  • A holistic 3-dimensional approach to leadership.
  • An appendix with great resources for personal reflection and reference.
  • And more!

Excerpt from Chapter 12: Be Courageous

When I found I could not, in good faith, support a design that was not a result of our process but that of our leader’s opinion (rather than data), I had to make a choice. I needed to have a crucial conversation—and it was not with a peer or subordinate.

Managing up is easier when the stakes are low. It is exponentially more challenging when it involves giving feedback, especially to your boss’s boss. But I know that “For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.” 2 Timothy 1:7 (NIV).

I prayed about what I should do. I set up a meeting with Mathias to provide feedback and a decision I had taken. This was not an easy task, as I had never given structured constructive feedback to anyone one level above me—let alone two levels above me—in the company before.

I set up to meet in the cafeteria over coffee. A neutral place. His office was just way too intimidating. Subject? Coaching. I expected him to naturally assume I was asking for some coaching. I was nervous. No backing out now. I documented what I was going to share with him so that I would not deviate from my message. Did I say I was nervous?

The day before the meeting, I was so nervous that I needed some mental reinforcement. So, I dragged my office buddy, Glenda, to the cafeteria for the cup of coffee she did not know she needed. There, I shared my plan so that she would tell me I was about to commit career suicide and that I should cancel the meeting with Mathias. She did not.

What drove this crazy plan? What would you do under similar circumstances? Did I experience any retaliation? Read the book to find out and learn how to apply it to your situation!
