How Leaders Grow Where They Are Planted
In the real world, no matter how you plan your life or career, circumstances arise that direct you to a path you did not choose nor want. How do you handle such a situation? As a leader, your immediate reaction should not be to run in the opposite direction. You should first stop and evaluate. That situation might very well be the path God has for you. I once faced such a situation. I did not run. It turned out to be a launchpad for my future success. Your success depends on how well you lean forward and learn to grow where you are planted.
How to grow where you are planted
- Seek help from the Holy Spirit. All leaders know it can be lonely at the top. You do not need to be alone. The Holy Spirit will guide you on your path. I covered that in 10 Strategies for better decision making.
- Be agile. Be ready to turn on a dime to move in a different direction if needed. We demand much for our careers from our business. However, sometimes, the success of our business requires a detour in our career plans. Embrace the change and carve your new path to success.
- Defy the ordinary. You can do this by being innovative. Turn the situation into an extraordinary growth opportunity. While you did not choose the situation, you do choose your response. Your response dictates your outcome.
- Learn to function without the promotion. Often, the unsolicited situation brings increased responsibilities but not a promotion. If your career experiences a delay in rewards, know that God will take you where you need to be – if your trust remains with Him. Walk in your promotion as a demonstration of your readiness.
Empowered leaders learn how to grow and thrive in any situation that comes. To be successful in challenging times, shift your focus from the pain of loss to the possibility of growth.
