How Leaders Stay Above the Noise

A business woman with head down and hands over her ears with there are 8 hands pointing a finger at her with the words “How Leaders Stay Above the Noise.”

We live in a fast-paced era where we are constantly bombarded with business pressures, information overload, and constant connectivity. This forms part of the distraction, making it increasingly challenging for leaders to stay focused on what matters the most and lead with impact.

I recall leading a team that was working on a new business strategy for innovation. The existing plan had reached the end of its effectiveness. It seemed that everyone had an idea of what the new strategy should include, so it was not long after we started that the critics and advisors began offering their unsolicited input.

The input came in meeting rooms, hallways, and via our work chat groups. We could not make progress with all this distraction because we spent more time responding to input versus working on our action plan.

Finally, one of my partners suggested we sequester ourselves for a period from all the “noise” while we focus on the mission. We did. The progress we made was dramatic. It was one of the best decisions we made as a team.

Leadership Noise Defined

Distraction from a leadership perspective is referred to as “noise.” Leadership noise is the perpetual conveyor of unnecessary information, critics, doubters, unsolicited advisors, conflicting messages, and misinformation, which can obscure judgment and add complexity to decision-making. It leads to distraction from the business objectives.

A major addition to this plethora of distractions is the overstimulation of digital sources such as social media and a mix of communication and entertainment apps, all competing for our immediate attention. This all comes with the speed of life, which is currently at warp speed.

Noise also comes from within. Even our inner thoughts can add to the din, distracting us from our mission. It’s from our internal struggles, doubt, and lack of faith that erode our confidence and drive, risk-taking, and bias for action. This noise can obscure our judgment and drive us to default to operating traditionally instead of leveraging our uniqueness.

The Dangers of Focusing on the Noise

Being immersed in the leadership noise can be consequential. If we are not self-aware, our mission will be drowned by the noise, and success will be fleeting.

  • This noise is draining and de-energizing.
  • Listening to the noise can distract us from our mission.
  • Noise can be a source of confusion. One example is receiving conflicting advice from experts. While a great resource, we should not blindly believe what we read from Dr. Google or the latest chatbot.
  • Noise can be disempowering. Doubters and naysayers can be very convincing by eroding your confidence and instilling fear. This, in turn, can hurt a team’s culture, leading to stress and burnout.
  • Noise can be a source of distraction, causing confusion and decisions to be made from reactions rather than being strategic, or emotions instead of logic.

The dangers of focusing on leadership noise are clear. However, like fine-tuning an old AM radio, our job is to find the signal buried deep inside the noise.

How to Stay Above the Audible Chaos

It’s important to recognize the noise and learn how to rise above it by filtering out what doesn’t align with your mission. Learn to quiet your mind and silence the external sources. Here are a few suggestions.

  • Have clarity of objective and focus. This will minimize distractions and help you stay on the path. Everything that demands attention, such as a ringing phone, is not urgent. Learn to filter out low-priority items and immediate distractions. Focus on the long-term goals.
  • Leverage intuition and discernment. This stems from being in touch with your organization to find the signal within the noise. While the noise can be compelling, your wisdom may lead you in a different direction based on knowledge and experience.
  • Find quiet time. Meditation is an excellent way to clear your head and refocus. It will shut out negative self-talk.
  • Remain calm in the chaos. It helps the organization avoid migrating to chaotic reaction and follow your lead. It helps you stay in control to logically evaluate all the information and pick out the signal from the noise.
  • Clear information flow. A key source of misinformation is a lack of clear, consistent communication, as well as an open communication strategy allowing others to ask questions for clarity.
  • Limit exposure to social and news media. These are some major sources of noise. That alone may lower your blood pressure.
  • Prioritize information flow. Be strategic with information flow and focus on data and real-life experiences that are helpful to achieving the mission.
  • Be mindful of who you take coaching and guidance from. Iron sharpens iron, but if you learn from a bent tree, you will grow up believing you are bent.  Change your close associates if they are a constant part of the noise.

These are some simple steps to stay above the noise. However, it takes focus and intentionality. It will not happen by default.

Staying above the noise is essential for effective leadership. It enables you to focus on the business objectives and priorities. Failure to do so will lead to being distracted, making poor decisions, and operating in a reactionary mode. Our job as leaders is to tune out the din and focus on the signal buried deep within the noise.
